What is knee pain?

Knee pain is pain found in or around the knee that can be dull, achey, sharp, shooting, or burning. It can indicate a condition affecting the knee joint or the soft tissue surrounding the knee.

What are the symptoms of knee pain?

Severity of knee pain is dependent on the cause of the problem. However there are some common signs and symptoms that one may experience with knee pain. These include:

What causes knee pain?

Knee pain can have many different causes that are not always due to underlying disease. Knee pain can be due from minor injury such as a sprain or a strain, overuse or too heavy of physical activity, lack of activity, or from sitting in an uncomfortable position for too long. Knee pain can also be caused by more serious conditions such as an ACL tear (tear of the anterior cruciate ligament which is one of four ligaments connecting the shinbone to the thigh bone) fractures, a torn meniscus (the tough, rubbery cartilage that absorbs shock between the shinbone and the thigh bone), knee bursitis (inflammation of the bursae), patellar tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons around the kneecap), arthritis, and more.
